The DOE's Office of Youth & Safety Development is offering parents and guardians a virtual workshop on Upstander Intervention training by the Center for Anti-Violence Education in collaboration with the Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes and the NYCDOE.
Responding to Microaggressions in the Workplace: In this community Upstander Workshop we will unpack microagresssions that are racist, ageist, transphobic, xenophobic etc. Participants will be asked to dive deep into the oppressive legacies that lead to microaggressions and reflect on how we disrupt these systems in our workplace and everyday lives. We will learn strategies for calling people in, to acknowledge and shift their behavior. Centering de-escalation techniques and communication strategies this workshop supports with shifting the workplace culture into an anti-oppressive environment.
Upstander 101: Roots of Oppression: Upstander 101 teaches people to be Upstanders and safely intervene when there is an act of violence to assist/help de-escalate. As Upstanders, our goal is to safely disrupt, intervene, prevent, and heal from acts of violence experienced due to gender-based, sexual, and hate violence. We also tailor our workshops to address specific issues that include the intersections of racism, homophobia, transphobia and xenophobia. In this workshop participants will learn strategies and de-escalation skills to keep each other safe and pool our expertise so that everyone walks away with a few more tools to move from being a bystander to violence, to an Upstander against it.
