This summer, Stuyvesant hosted the School Construction Authority’s Summer Internship Program, a six-week paid internship within an SCA department or an SCA business partner, along with career training. This program was established in 1998 to provide talented college-bound NYC public school high students with exposure to construction and construction-related careers. Four students from Stuyvesant took part in this year’s program. Christopher Echevarria-Smith, Kathryn Jano, Andrew Wargo and Christopher Yip. Mr. Arthur Griffith served as the training administrator for the program.
Ms. Ruby Saake, Senior Management Specialist, Business Development Division for NYC SCA contributed photos and a review paraphrased in this Update. This summer marked the introduction of a "Smart House" design curriculum developed and conducted by two SCA College Interns, Julia Holmes and Ashley Reilly. They drew inspiration for the program from the smart cities curriculum (SoSC) piloted by NYU Tandon School of Engineering in 2012. The curriculum involved design challenge activities such as programming a microcontroller using JavaScript Block Editor coding language, controlling a robot buggy car to navigate through a maze using coding commands, and integrating sensors into the design, construction, and simulation of a “smart home.” The training program included 14 workshops sessions on career and college planning, professional development, financial literacy, civic engagement, stress management and mental health and included a tour of an SCA construction site.
