Over last weekend, the Stuyvesant History Club received an exclusive tour of the USCGC Lilac, a former steam-powered lighthouse tender, just a few blocks away from Stuy. We got to learn a lot about the history of not just the vessel, but also about the history of lighthouses and the Coast Guard, from the foundation of predecessor organizations by Alexander Hamilton to the modern day. We got to see the inner workings of the vessel, from the engines to navigation, the hierarchy of sailors onboard, and how wartime affected the Coast Guard and its ships.
