Stuy Celebrates Black History Month 2026

On February 12, Stuy celebrated Black History Month with their annual Dinner and cultural celebration! We were happy to have a West African Dance performance by Harambee Dance Company, who beautifully demonstrated a brief history of West African drums, sound, and dance; fully engaging the audience and encouraged crowd participation.

We also welcomed our guest speaker, Lauren Thomas, a Stuyvesant High School graduate of 2005 who went on to earn a B.A. in Social Studies from Harvard College, and a J.D. from Yale Law School. Lauren is the General Counsel of the Brooklyn Museum, serves on the Board of Directors of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of San Francisco, and the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association. Also, Lauren is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Law School, where she teaches a course on startups and the law.

During Lauren’s speech she addressed the peaks and valleys of being a Stuyvesant student and how her experience here propelled her towards excellence and navigating the world around her; encouraging families to embrace every unforgettable moment in high school.
