On Thursday, February 9, 2023, Stuy BSL (Black Student's League) and DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee) hosted the 2023 Black History Month Dinner. Students presented on Black Students at Stuy, Black Alumni, and more. We all enjoyed delicious food, a dance lesson and had an amazing cultural experience! The special guest speaker was Kamau Ware, founder of Black Gotham Experience, an immersive visual storytelling project that celebrates the impact of the African Diaspora on New York City. He spoke on NYC’s history, the importance of asking questions and having uncomfortable conversations, and addressing childhood wounds.
Current faculty advisor and school counselor, Ms. Undine Guthrie wrote: "On behalf of the BSL, we want to thank everyone for coming out and supporting the incredible Black History Month dinner last night. I want to start off by recognizing the pioneers of Stuyvesant's chapter of the Black Student League, the late Mrs. Eleanor Archie, and Mr. Angel Colon. Thank you for paving the way and having the foresight to commemorate such a paramount event in our history. Angel you have been instrumental in unifying our school community and it does not go unrecognized.
Thank you to the DEI committee for carrying the torch and expanding our school's mission. Your dedication to the empowerment of our school's mission of students and staff needing to be heard, seen and relevant in our school community speaks volumes. I have seen you all work tirelessly to facilitate the important task of having courageous conversations and following it all up with action here at Stuyvesant. Wednesday's PD for staff was so on point by illuminating the ways that our students of color have experienced high school, and gave great suggestions on how we can incorporate a growth mindset as educators.
We are all so thankful for yesterday's turnout. The food, the music and our speakers truly embodied our vision and school spirit! We look forward to more of these events that bring joy, unity and appreciation of diversity and culture. We are truly gifted with such a loving school community."
