It is with deep regret that we must share news about the passing of former Stuyvesant English teacher, Philip Osburn Mott. Mr. Mott was a ubiquitous and larger-than-life presence at Stuyvesant from 2002-2017; he chaperoned every senior prom, served as a self-appointed “emcee” at faculty gatherings, and was the only teacher to perform with Stuyvesant’s student chorus. The walls of his classroom were adorned with photos of his American Literature and Shakespeare students, many of whom hung out with him in room 1025 during free periods and after school. In 2006, Mr. Mott represented the Stuyvesant faculty as the student-selected graduation speaker. When he stepped onto the stage at Lincoln Center, he received a rock star’s ovation, a fitting tribute to the love he elicited from students and colleagues alike.
Rest in peace and power, Philip.
