Please join us for the Stuyvesant High School Parents' Association General Meeting on Tuesday, February 15th at 7 pm featuring a special presentation by Beth Sandweiss, MA, MSW: “Tapping the Power of Self Compassion When Times are Tough.”
Parenting is challenging for just about everyone — especially during these days of the Covid-19 pandemic. It's hard to feel that we're doing it right. How can we stop being so hard on ourselves and let go of self-judgment? Wouldn’t it be great if, as parents, we could treat ourselves with the same kindness and caring we strive to offer our children and our friends?
That's where self-compassion can be helpful. It's a skill that anyone can learn and can apply to the stresses that we all face. Parents instinctively understand that we need to nourish ourselves to have more to give. Yet the problem with the usual self-care strategies — pampering ourselves, getting a massage, exercise — is that they depend on having free time (and no quarantine) and are only helpful to us when we're away from our children. We need something to help us WHILE we are struggling with our kids, so we can choose how to respond instead of reacting. This presentation is a good place to start.
