What should I know about SING!?

SING! 2020 rehearsals will begin on Tuesday, January 28th and continue until performances begin on Thursday, March 5th. The rehearsal calendar can be viewed HERE.

WHAT IS SING! SING! is Stuyvesant’s schoolwide theater competition between three teams: Seniors, Juniors and SophFrosh (sophomores with Freshmen). Each team will put together an hour-long production centered around a theme and performed over three nights (Thursday, March 5th; Friday, March 6th; Saturday, March 7th). All three performances will be judged by hidden Stuyvesant Alumni in the audience and scored to determine the winning team. SING!, an annual Stuyvesant tradition since 1973, is the largest student-run event at Stuyvesant. Many alumni have commented on it being a fun, bonding and rewarding experience at Stuyvesant. Each SING! production is a completely original, theatrical and musical event with approximately 20 different crews. Crews range from makeup to scriptwriting, all with varying levels of commitment. The plot, the lyrics, the choreography, the set, the props, the backdrop, the costumes, etc. are all designed and/or created by the students on each team.

Applications for various roles, such as songwriters, scriptwriters, and directors, have been posted and emailed to students at their stuy.edu email addresses from the student SING! coordinators. Applications began over the Winter Break.  The Students organize Facebook closed groups for each SING! team with links emailed to students.

WHAT SHOULD PARENTS KNOW? Rehearsals occur daily after school, on weekends and through the mid-winter recess in February. See the calendar for exact dates and times. There is an administrator on site during every rehearsal. Each grade also has two staff faculty advisors assigned to the floors of their respective grade’s rehearsals. There are no school-sanctioned or chaperoned activities or rehearsals outside those that are outlined on the calendar. There are also no school-sanctioned or chaperoned after-parties on performance nights. Students are released immediately following the end of the last grade’s performance of each evening’s show. Clean-up for after the performance occurs the following days of the last performance of the show.

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? Tickets are sold online for SING! and sell out quickly. Announcements are made in advance as to the times that cast members may purchase and then when tickets are available for purchase to the public. Ticket sales are limited and tracked electronically and tickets will be voided if multiple purchases are made above and beyond the ticket limit. All questions and concerns about SING! should be addressed to the COSA (Coordinator of Student Affairs), Mr. Matthew Polazzo at mpolazzo@schools.nyc.gov or at extension 2602 between 3:30-5pm.
