Principal Yu shared the following message with Students on Monday, February 7, 2022
February is Black History Month and an important opportunity to honor the significant contributions and role of African-Americans in shaping our nation. The diversity of our country is our strength, and the prominence of African-American achievements, sacrifices, and culture embody the American experience. Events during the past few years have elevated and accelerated the need to engage in open and honest dialogue so we can learn how all people, all cultures, and all our similarities and differences are the interwoven threads of our country's fabric. The conversations needed are ones that allow us to express and share our experiences and perspectives with each other without judgement but rather curiosity--a curiosity to explore with openness, respect, and appreciation for what we can learn and understand about people, their culture, and their contributions to our communities.
We can individually and collectively extend our acknowledgement of Black history beyond February through curiosity and learning. I encourage you to check out local events and exhibits to see, listen, and learn about Black history and experiences. Whether in science, literature, art, or any area of the human experience, the indelible contributions of African-Americans are prominent fixtures within our daily lives. Throughout February, we will continue to share events, activities, and resources (see today's Weekly Update) with our school community so we can engage collectively in our learning.
