In Update #31, you read about Ms. Lisa Shuman and Stuy Alumna ’07, Raisa Ostapenko, who auditioned Stuyvesant students for a June 3rd reading of the play Something that Belongs to You written by Stuy alumnus ‘55, Holocaust survivor, and Nobel Laureate in Chemistry,
Dr. Roald Hoffman. The Semi-performative reading will be accompanied by a ceremony to honor Dr. Hoffmann’s accomplishments. The play tells the story of Frieda Pressner and her son Emile, who survived the Holocaust in German-occupied Poland by hiding in the attic of a Ukrainian neighbor. Set in both 1992 in Philadelphia and during the Second World War in what is today a Ukrainian village, the play explores the shades of grey that characterized interpersonal relationships during the Holocaust and aims to examine what it meant to be a rescuer, a collaborator, a perpetrator, and a victim. It is a reflection on the Holocaust by Bullets – an understudied aspect of this human tragedy.
You can obtain tickets to the event on EventBrite for just $15. This event is organized entirely by student, faculty, and alumni volunteers. Any and all donations are appreciated to help us with expenses for the reading and commemorative ceremony. Please consider donating to the GoFundMe account.
