The O'Keefe Foundation Scholarship is worth $8,000 (paid over four years) in memory of Firefighter Patrick J. O'Keefe, who lost his life at the World Trade Center on September 1, 2001.
There are NO ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS for this scholarship...but, the application requirements are very specific. Please carefully read below:
Applicants are eligible only if they fall under one of two categories:
Option 1-student is a US Citizen who is an immigrant, or child of an immigrant
Option2-student has lost a parent to an act of violence
There is an essay requirement, with a word limit of 1000, with a 12.pt font, double spaced:
Option 1 (Immigrant Student/Parent) Essay must include:
-the circumstances by which the student arrived in the US
-what are the challenges faced both here upon arrival and abroad
-what were the influences on the decision of the family to become American citizens
-future plans
Option 2 (Loss of Parent) Essay must include:
-the circumstances surrounding the loss
-how the applicant and family are coping with the loss
-the personal goals and aspirations of the student
Two rec letters are required for all applicants:
-one from Stuy staff (teacher, guidance counselor, adviser, etc.)
-one from outside of Stuy
To apply, bring SIX (6) copies of your essay, your outside letter of rec, and the complete application (attached) no later than MONDAY, MARCH 11th to the College Office. They can then include the School Counselor rec and mail for you; if you’d prefer a teacher rec be sent instead, please ask your teacher to provide your college counselor with a hard copy of their letter by MONDAY, MARCH 11th.
