NEW STUDENT ‘INTERACTION MONITORING BEGINNING APRIL 6, 2020

In response to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) has shifted to a temporary remote learning environment to safeguard our staff and students, and to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. As school-based teams are hard at work embracing this transition and finding innovative ways to keep our students and families involved in the learning process, we must ensure that we are implementing structures and protocols for monitoring daily student engagement and interaction.

Student interaction in a remote learning environment is monitored daily by school teams. The goals for monitoring student engagement and interaction in a remote setting are:

  • Maintaining frequent contact with students to ensure participation and engagement
  • Creating a system for citywide student engagement tracking to ensure the right supports get to the right students and families at the right time
  • Monitoring student general well-being and escalating attendance concerns to school leaders

Student interaction is defined as, but not limited to:

  • Student submission of an assignment
  • Student completion of an online assessment
  • Student participation in an online forum, chat log, or discussion thread
  • Student-initiated phone call, email, and/or other digital communication or responses to teacher email
  • Other evidence of participation as determined by the principal

The information collected in STARS Classroom will NOT be used for other attendance-related items, e.g., attendance on student report cards or other student records. The information collected in STARS Classroom is only being used to track student interactions in remote learning for the purposes of ensuring student well-being and following up with families. Attendance during remote learning will not appear on student report cards or other student records.
