This past Tuesday, Mr. Harold Stephan contributes that he and Assistant Principal, Dr. Raymond Wheeler took two Music Appreciation classes to Jazz Standard in the NoMad district of Manhattan. At the venue, students were treated to an authentic Manhattan jazz club experience featuring a performance by professional jazz musicians, including a piece by jazz legend Thelonious Monk who is a former Stuy student. After the performance, the musicians explained the origin of jazz and how the musicians interact on stage by listening to each other and improvising.
