Ms. Marissa Maggio shares that for the final project in the Urban Ecology classes students are asked to create a plan for the redevelopment of a waterfront area near Redhook Brooklyn. The students are tasked with satisfying the demands of a number of stakeholders to create a plan that will benefit the people, the economy and the environment. Part of that plan is the creation of a new green building on the site, perhaps a community center or a mall depending on the plan. The students then spend the last 2 weeks of the term building their building - complete with a functioning green roof. On the last day of class Ms. Maggio pours "dirty pour" on the roofs to see how well the students design filters and retains the water. A BIG thank you to the Parent’s Association for supporting the project and their grant that allowed the purchasing of the materials the students used to build their Green Buildings. Here are some of the students’ creations.
