This past Friday, students from Mr. Sandler's New York City History class took a trolley tour of Greenwood cemetery in Sunset Park Brooklyn. It was incredibly gratifying for the students because they were able to see the tombstones and the mausoleums of many of the famous New Yorkers they studied throughout the semester. The students learned about memorials to the Revolutionary and Civil War veterans, and examined the lives of famous New Yorkers such as Dewitt Clinton, Boss Tweed, Horace Greeley, Basquiat, and James Weldon Johnson (who wrote the black national anthem). It was wonderful to tour the gorgeous landscape and statues of this necropolis. View a full size photo collage here.
