Last week, Social Studies teacher, Mr. Robert Sandler took his NYC History class on a walking tour of Greenwich Village. They "learned about the history of Washington Square Park, explored the places where bohemians, artists and activists such as Mabel Dodge, John Reed, Edward Hopper, Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, and Jane Jacobs live and performed. [They] also visited the house that Mark Twain’s ghost still haunts, Emma Lazarus’ brownstone where she wrote “The Colossus”, the site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and the 1970 Weather Underground Bombing. We then explored Julius’ and the Stonewall Inn where we learned about LGBT history from the Dutch era through the AIDS epidemic.
[They] also had special private tours of both the Church of the Ascension (where President John Tyler married) and the Salmagundi Club. The class also enjoyed cannolis & Mamoun’s Falafel. Seeing the landmarks like the Victorian Jefferson Market Library and quaint mid-19thc Grove Court that they studied in class in person was a real treat! " (photos courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
