A small but dedicated crew of Jewish History students from Mr. Robert Sandler's class braved the cold to see the Yale Strom Quartet play at the Eldridge Street Synagogue. Yale performed an original piece, The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire Cantata that he wrote in 2011 to commemorate the tragedy that took place on March 25, 1911 on the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place. Tragically, 146 people, mostly Italian and Jewish immigrant women, lost their lives.
Strom’s cantata uses spoken word, Yiddish and Italian songs, and instrumental music to create a scene of what work-life was like in the factory before the fire, the horrific events during the fire and the aftermath. (photos courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
