This week Mr. Robert Sandler's Jewish History class celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Metropolitan Klezmer band at the Eldridge Street Synagogue! The octet played exuberant versions of wedding dance, trance, folk, swing, as well as soundtrack material from vintage Yiddish films. The bandleader & historian Eve Sicular also taught the class about the thriving Soviet Yiddish culture until Stalin’s purges.
The most powerful performance was a rarely heard ballad of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. The students loved it! (photos courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
