Several members of Mr. Sandler's Jewish History class recently attended a powerful screening of TORN at the Museum of Jewish Heritage. The documentary explores the emotional and political fallout of the now-iconic “KIDNAPPED” poster campaign that appeared across New York City following Hamas’s October 7 attack and Israel’s ensuing war in Gaza. Through the voices of artists, activists, and hostage families, the film examines how a distant conflict reverberated through New York’s streets, sparking debates over identity, free speech, and empathy.
After the screening, students participated in an in-depth Q&A with filmmaker Nim Shapira, activist Nina Mogilnik, and college student Julia Simon. The discussion was engaging and thought-provoking, as students asked insightful questions about the film’s themes and production process. It was a rewarding and memorable evening that deepened their understanding of how global events shape dialogue and identity here at home.
