Mr. Robert Sandler shares that Wednesday, his Jewish History class took a trip to see the musical Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish! This critically acclaimed production put on by the National Yiddish Theater Folksbeine and directed by Joel Grey was incredibly powerful! Since students are studying Sholem Aleichem’s short stories (the writer behind the creation of Tevye), the historical context (early 20th century Russian Jewish experience) and the original Broadway production and film, they really appreciated all the nuances and subtleties of the production. The highlight was a specially arranged talkback with the cast who stayed for an hour long conversation with the students about acting, dance, Yiddish, and the musical’s themes of tradition, assimilation and anti-Semitism. It was an unforgettable event! Mr. Sandler thanks the Alumni Association for funding this opportunity. (photo courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
