The Eco-Fact of the Week from the Environmental Club for the week of September 13, 2021
Remember the dolls, or toy trains, or cooking sets you used to play with when you were a child? 90% of the toy market is filled with those plastic toys, and while it may be fun for the time being, it will eventually be heading for the landfills, as they are not biodegradable or recyclable. In fact, 80% of them end up in landfills, incinerators, or the ocean, all of which pollute the ecosystems and the air it surrounds. So, if you are thinking of getting your younger family members or friends a toy, think about supporting a company that uses biodegradable plastic or purchasing a toy from a different material. If you have old toys that you no longer want or are collecting dust, Lego’s Replay Program, Mattel’s Playback Program, or the Terracycle Program’s collaboration with other toy brands such as LeapFrog and LOL Surprise take your used toys and recycles and repurposes them. You can always pass them along to other children. Help to preserve our resources and properly sort your trash!
