The Eco-Fact of the Week by the Environmental Club for the week of October 11, 2021
We’ve all been guilty of this: discarding the unappetizing portion of discolored vegetables or bland mac and cheese from the cafeteria. While you may think it’s not a big deal, when you think about the number of students at Stuy, in the country, doing this everyday for multiple periods, the waste starts adding up. According to a study done by WWF along with other organizations, they found that the national food waste could total up to 530,000 tons annually excluding milk! This is equivalent to approximately 20.9 billion gallons of water and $ 1.7 billion wasted. But what’s also interesting to note is that schools in the study were able to reduce their food waste by 3% and milk waste by 12.4 % with some changes. So, just be mindful of what you are throwing away. Decline the foods if you know you don’t want it, save the foods that are packaged such as apple slices for later to eat, and if you cannot finish, make sure to compost the leftover meal. Help to preserve our resources and properly sort your trash!
