Eco-Fact of the Week - Week of March 29, 2021

The Environmental Club shares the Eco-Fact of the Week for the week of March 29, 2021! Enjoy the Spring Break!

One of the most pressing environmental issues we face is the amount of plastic waste in our landfills and our oceans. Even as plastic packaging becomes more integrated into our daily lives and is responsible for 16% of solid waste in America, less than ten percent is recycled. This is hazardous to over 180 animal species, habitats, and humans as animals consume plastic, invasive species use plastic as a transportation medium, and chemicals in the plastic can have effects on the human body. On the bright side, aside from governmental policies such as those limiting plastic bag use, many companies have shifted to sustainable packaging to appeal to customers, as various studies have discovered that over half of consumers consider green packaging when buying products. Some examples include Kellogg, which plans to achieve 100% recyclable packaging in 2025, and McDonald’s, which plans to have all of its packaging from recycled sources. This indicates that as consumers, we can choose to purchase products with green packaging to have a more positive environmental impact and to show that the problem of waste matters. Help to preserve our resources and properly sort your trash!
