CyberStuy was held on November 18th. CyberStuy is a biannual interactive open house targeted toward middle school students in NYC to teach them about what computer science is and what Stuyvesant has to offer in terms of CS. It was an initiative started by a group of students and the StuyCS department based on a mission: to introduce computer science to these students in the hopes that it will encourage them one day to not only apply to Stuyvesant but also inspire them to pursue a career in computer science or technology.
The first ever CyberStuy was held this past April with around 300 people attending. The second CyberStuy was held on November 18th, with around 300 people attending as well. We had an info session about what computer is and what Stuy has to offer in terms of CS, including current courses and clubs. There was also an alumni and Q&A panel, and students demoed their projects as well as the robotics team. In addition, participants attended hands-on workshops created and led by current Stuy students. Some examples included Think It, Write It, Scratch It!, Intro to HTML, Intro to Processing, What’s the Internet?, and Let’s Makey Makey Music.
The next CyberStuy will be held in April, and we hope to reach more middle school students throughout the city!
Mr. Contreras adds, “we’ve started a new tradition that supports outreach to middle schools, family engagement, and promotes computer science skills through panel discussions, presentations and hands on workshops. I’m proud of the hard work and planning by our CS students and faculty.
