What is the National Merit Scholarship Program? How does a student become a National Merit semifinalist?
All 10th and 11th graders will take the PSAT at Stuyvesant on October 16, 2019.
For JUNIORS, this is also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifier Test! The PSAT/NMSQT is the official route of entry to the National Merit Scholarship Program. What is the National Merit Scholarship Program? Semifinalists are the highest scoring entrants in each state. Qualifying scores vary from state to state and from year to year, but the scores of all Semifinalists are extremely high. NMSC provides scholarship application materials to about 16,000 Semifinalists through their high schools. Another 34,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® who do not score high enough to be semifinalists receive Letters of Commendation and National Merit Commended Scholars. STUYVESANT HAS 330 COMMENDED NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS IN THE CLASS OF 2020! Finalists are chosen based on their academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay. About 7,600 students each year win scholarships!
