On Wednesday May 17th, 2023 the World Languages Department’s Spanish Team celebrated its 46th annual Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Ceremonia de Iniciación. Twenty-five students enrolled in Advanced Placement Spanish Language and Culture were officially admitted into Stuy’s chapter of the national honor society, the Severo Ochoa capítulo. The latter is named after the late Spanish physician and biochemist who won the Nobel prize in his field in 1959 along with Arthur Kornberg for their discovery of the mechanisms in the biological synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid.
The Spanish team also recognized over 48 students who won medals for their performance on the National Spanish Examinations administered last April, including one perfect score on the NSE in Spanish II and one gold medal winner for level II in Portuguese.
Additionally, the Spanish team presented awards for excellence and merit in each of the respective courses they facilitate to their top students. 48 students were acknowledged for their commitment and dedication to the study of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
The festivities also included a Flamenco performance by professional bailaora flamenca Aliesha Bryan and a special guest appearance by American novelist Angie Cruz who was the keynote speaker.
Lastly, students, parents, and staff members enjoyed an eclectic menu representing the rich and varied gastronomy of the Spanish-speaking world while rejoicing in the amazing tunes played by our talented Jazz Band and some choir members. Take a look at the pictures and links for a visual summary of the festivities!
