A letter from School Counselors to Students

The entire school counseling department hopes you are healthy and safe.

We imagine you are feeling a range of emotions. We want to assure you that while we are not with you in person, we are here to support you each school day we are not together. We are a family, albeit a virtual family at the moment.

Over the past week, we have been working as a counseling team to set up a variety of resources to support your emotional, mental, and physical well-being during this time.

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL SUPPORT:

Though social media can be a source of stress, it can also be used as a platform to support one another. In the next coming weeks, we will be sending out a weekly Counseling Department email, that will include:

-links to support self-care   -physical exercise options -virtual activities for when you need a break

During this time, it's important to reach out if you need additional emotional support.  Your counselor/the school social worker (jchockgoldman@schools.nyc.gov) is available and you can reach them via email to set up a time to chat.  If you are having anxiety or depression and want to be chatting with a clinician online/via text, here are two sites to contact:

Crisis line: https://www.crisistextline.org/texting-in

LGBTQ students: https://www.thetrevorproject.org/get-help-now/

If you are having thoughts of suicide, please reach out to Mobile Crisis to have support come to your home:

Mobile Crisis: 888-NYC-WELL (692-9355)

And if you immediately need to go to the hospital, please call 911.

Support is the most important thing during these times!

ACADEMICS:

We know that everyone is concerned about their academics and how that will play out during this time with a lack of structure. We highly recommend establishing a routine as this will lead to a sense of normalcy and success. Here are some options to help:

-ARISTA has online tutoring available for students who are in need of specific subject assistance

-Khan Academy has a wonderful sample structure

-Time schedule sheet (if you need to use regular school schedule day due to other obligations)

-Time schedule sheet during coronovirus (if you need during the day)

Your counselor will be reaching out to you individually. To help us get an idea of your current status, please take a few minutes to complete this survey and complete it NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, MARCH 22ND AT 11:59 PM.
