    Description

    U.S. History

    Who should take this course?

This is a required course that is normally taken during the junior. Students who come to Stuyvesant with advanced standing in Social Studies may take this course as sophomores.

    What will we be studying?

The fall covers Pre-Revolutionary America, the American Revolution, Federalist Period, Early Republic, Jacksonian Era, Sectional Divisions, the U.S. Civil War, and Reconstruction.

The spring covers the conquest of the frontier and the industrialization of America in the second half of the nineteenth century, the progressive era at the turn of the twentieth century, World War I, the "Roaring 20's," the Depression 30's, World War II, "The Cold War," and the many changes in American life since the Second World War.

What will be expected of me?

All students will be expected to produce a substantial historical research paper. Methods of teaching, as well as the number of tests required, vary with individual teachers. Most teachers require at least eight tests during the course of the term. Many teachers encourage debates on crucial issues. Nightly homework is also the norm.

    How is the course taught?

Teachers vary in their use of homework, class participation, and examinations as a basis for grading. Class discussion is an integral part of this course.
