Three Cheers for the English Department & Our Students!

Dr. Emily Moore shares some good news from the poetry and creative writing classes this year.

With help from the Alumni Association, PA, English Department funds, and Library, Ms. Annie Thoms and Dr. Moore worked together to host two Stuy alumni poets, Tiffany Troy and Adeeba Talukder, as well as two additional poets Taylor Mali and Jason Koo, this year, all of whom read to over a hundred Stuy kids each in the Poetry Workshop, Writing to Create Change, and Foundations of Literature classes.

Caliper Literary Magazine has had a renaissance under new faculty advisor Bill Wrigley, and teamed up with the newly reopened Poets House - four blocks south of Stuy - to host a Stuy student Open Mic after school.

Three Stuy students were honored by the prestigious CCNY Poetry Competition, including a 3rd place winner Xueming Sam Li, and eight Stuyvesant students were honored by the Random House Creative Writing Competition, including two $10,000 scholarship winners, Sofia Hernandez and poet Amber Shen, the most of any school. Other honorees include our students Mary Lee, Kelsey Pan, Sophianne Leung, Jin Kim, Jason Ng, and Kayla Lin, who won for a poem with the memorable title of “A Calm Artsy teacher with Not-So-Artsy Crazy students.”

Congrats to all!
