Support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Stuy Cancer Fighting Crabs - Raising $50,000 for 2019 Students of the Year Program

CALL FOR ACTION - Senior, Leilei Hao and junior Zoraiz Irshad along with the Cancer Fighting Crabs are participating in a fundraising challenge with all proceeds going towards the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (largest blood-related cancer research grant-provider). They plan to name the grant after Stuyvesant in honor of everyone who has suffered or watched someone they loved suffer from blood cancer.

Zoraiz has shared her story:

"When I was 7 years old, my uncle died from blood cancer. I remember him bringing toys for me whenever he would visit. He was funny, caring, and really smart. To this day, my cousins can’t talk about my uncle for more than a couple minutes without choking up. When he died, my aunt had to work full time to provide for her family, while at the same time take care of and console her three young sons. It was a struggle for everyone because my uncle was someone we looked up to. To see him suffer and die, without being able to do anything to help, was not easy. I was unable to make new memories with my uncle, my cousins were unable to experience once in a lifetime events with their father, and my aunt was unable to grow old alongside her husband. My uncle’s story is not one in a million; families all over the world experience the same pain that I have felt. In his memory, I joined a couple of friends to form the Cancer Fighting Crabs; representing Stuyvesant High School as a candidate for the 2019 Students of the Year Program under the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We are participating in the seven-week fundraising campaign, from January 13th to March 1st, so that those who are less fortunate can get another chance to live.

You can support their mission by making a donation, which you can generously provide directly to the LLS via our fundraising website: http://events.lls.org/nyc/nycsoy19/cancerfightingcrabs.

Why LLS? The LLS has fundraised over 1.2 BILLION dollars into cancer research. In fact, in the last decade, over 40% of cancer treatments and drugs came from LLS funded research, which is not only being used to treat blood cancer patients, but also those affected by other cancers and diseases, such as breast cancer, liver cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimer’s Disease. The Cancer Fighting Crabs and LLS are dedicated to finding a CURE by supporting researchers. Hopefully, you’ll join us crabs to fight against blood cancer and save lives. Your generosity makes an impact!
