Stuyvesant High School celebrated Diwali and Gamba on Friday, October 21 with Stuy SAYA, HSE, SAME in the student cafeteria! Dozens of students, faculty and administration came together for dancing, food and henna painting learning about this Hindu and Buddhist celebration. We're wishing all our Stuy families and beyond a Happy Diwali!

This celebration came at a special time just one day after Mayor Eric Adams' office announced his support for making Diwali a school holiday for the 2023-2024 school year. If approved in Albany, Diwali will become a recognized school holiday in place of Chancellor's Day traditionally held the first Thursday in June.

Stuy students, Raaghav Mittal, along with Lekha Wood and mentor Neil Desai, started a petition on Sept. 30 calling on Adams to declare Diwali as an official public school holiday. They obtained 4000 signatures! So proud of our Stuy students participating in this activism! Read more here.
