Stuyvesant held its first parent chat with families of Black and Laninx students on February 16, 2022. The meeting was jointly held by Stuy's Equity Team and our DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) committees. Stuy Alumna '00, Candice Morgan joined with over 35 parents and guardians in a virtual 'chat' on Zoom. We were also joined by the new Parent's Association Stuy Mosaic Facebook group which families may join at this link. The group is a community for Stuy Parents and Parents of Stuy Students who identify as Black, Indigenous, Hispanic/Latina/Latine/Latino/Latinx”.
The chat included a video of ‘What I love About Stuy’ from previous students, a game of Kahoot featuring Black History Month, and a back and forth discussion between families of their experiences at Stuy and ways to improve. Principal Yu expressed, "...We heard the stories from the families… there is much more work to do - we have to be the models of patience, understanding, and openness .... [we hope to create] a more inclusive, equitable environment where we can truly see and appreciate the assets every individual brings to our community".
We hope this is the first of many more opportunities to meet together. Many thanks to all the teamwork that went into this meeting from the members of DEI and our Equity Team (Ms. Banfield, Ms. Brandan, Mr. Colon, Ms. Ingram, Ms. O’Neil, Ms. Pedrick, Mr. Sunwoo, Ms. Suri, Ms. Wilson, Ms. Wright, Mr. Yu, and students Arlette Duran & Sukanya Ferguson); and to the families able to attend!
