WHAT IS SING!?

SING! began fifty-three years ago as a minor, low-budget performance involving a small portion of the student body. Today, SING! is the biggest theatrical event Stuyvesant holds. It unites almost half of the student body in the most anticipated part of the school year.

SING! is an inter-grade competition between the SophFrosh, Junior, and Senior grades. Each SING! has approximately one month to create its own original musical. Every aspect of SING! is student produced, from dancing and acting to the script and costume design. The coordinators, producers, directors, performers, and crews help to organize and produce each grade’s vision. SING! participants come in during weekends and stay long hours for rehearsals, sometimes lasting for hours after school ends. Their hard work and dedication is tested when they are given the opportunity to perform live in front of a sold out audience and judging panel. When the performances end on Saturday, the coordinators and Student Union gather together to tally up the judges’ scores, and the winners are released at midnight. Despite the competition, the true power of a SING! is the unparalleled bonding that occurs between students of all grades, bringing Stuyvesant together as a community for one week of excitement.
