SHSAA Unveils Plaque in Dr. John Nikol's Honor

Last week, the Stuyvesant High School Alumni Association honored the legacy of the esteemed Dr. John Nikol, former Stuyvesant Social Studies teacher, at an in-person memorial service and plaque unveiling. Dr. Nikol was a dedicated and beloved social studies teacher at Stuyvesant High School from 1986-2007. He had a PhD in European history and taught for many years at both Fordham Prep and Stuyvesant High School. Dr. Nikol started the first experimental 10th grade AP European History class at Stuyvesant with success and wrote countless college recommendations for students. While at Stuyvesant, he also served as faculty advisor for The Standard. He passed away in 2022 after a three year battle with Parkinson's and Lewy Body Dementia.

It was a lovely ceremony to honor Dr. John Nikol and his dedication to history and making learning fun and his influence on generations of students. The late Dr. Nikol's wife and two children spoke at the memorial abou memories of their father and Stuyvesant. The plaque is outside room 235 and will be mounted soon in his memory.

A scholarship was created in Dr. Nikol's honor by his family with the first winner in the class of 2023. Read more about it here.
