The New York (i.e. Manhattan) Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) provides annual monetary awards to high school seniors intending to study engineering in college. One application can be provided for the student to be considered for all (depending on eligibility) of the following:
Scholar Award: Awarded to a student that intends to study engineering in college, is a resident of and/or attends high school in Manhattan and meets the selection criteria outlined below.
SEAP Scholarship: Given on behalf of the Society of Engineering and Architectural Professionals and awarded to a student that intends to study engineering in college, is a resident of New York City and/or attends high school in New York City and meets the selection criteria outlined below.
Thorbjorn (Toby) Hansson Memorial Scholarship: Given in memory of past president Thorbjorn (Toby) Hansson. Toby and his family immigrated from Iceland to the United States in 1968. He contributed extensively to the profession working on large scale engineering projects from New York to Hawaii, living in various cities to immerse himself in his work. He also gave his time to causes such as NYSSPE to support the engineering profession. This scholarship is awarded to a student that intends to study engineering in college, is a resident of New York City and/or attends high school in New York City, meets the selection criteria outlined below and exhibits values the board believes align with Toby’s history, interest in the
built environment and volunteerism.
Selection Criteria
As outlined above and:
• Academic performance,
• Extracurricular activities,
• Recommendation by the student’s guidance counselor, and
• An essay written by the student on the contribution he/she hopes to make in society as an engineer.
Each selected winner and his/her parents/guardians will be invited as guests to attend our June dinner during which the scholarships will be presented.
