What will happen with AP Physics?
There could be no question that was more asked this week than the above whether you are a student, parent or staff member. This past week, Principal Contreras led discussions on the changes to the AP Physics course in several forums beginning with the SLT (School Leadership Team) Meeting on Tuesday; answering questions from 10th grade parents at the Sophomore Parent Workshop; at Breakfast with the Principal, where AP Physics was the agenda topic; and several other discussions in meetings with counselors, administration and students. On Tuesday, December 10th at 4pm, Mr. Contreras has invited junior students only to a ‘Town Hall’ to discuss it. He sent this letter to students Sunday.
At the discussions this week, Mr. Contreras explained the historical context of how physics was taught at Stuyvesant; the logic around giving all students the opportunity to take AP1 Physics as an AP; and the reasons why he will now change the course name to Advanced Physics without an AP distinction, while yet affording students opportunity to be prepared and take the AP exam in May 2020. The Advanced Physics course will be one of the ‘College Level’ courses that are outlined in our HS Profile that is shared with college admissions offices, and both Mr. Contreras and the College Office will work to clarify this to college admissions officers. Any forthcoming information will be emailed and/or posted in your Talos account under the “Info” tab by clicking “Documents” and the folder “Letters from Stuyvesant”.
