On Monday 3/23, Ms. Annie Thoms took her spring Writing to Make Change classes to the solo painting exhibit "Mother Warriors" by her HS classmate Siyan Wong, Stuy '93. The exhibit, at the Equity Gallery at 245 Broome St., features Siyan's paintings depicting the home life, labor, and activism of Chinese immigrant women. Wong also invited high school students from around the city to submit paintings and drawings on the theme of immigration for a juried award. One of her current 9th-grade students, Sici Ma, entered the contest and won second place: a cash prize and her painting of a girl washing dishes hung on the wall of the gallery. The Writing to Make Change juniors and seniors commented on how Wong's work made them see familiar scenes and people with new eyes, and discussed the importance of representation of immigrant stories. See a full size photo collage here.
