Ms. Marissa Maggio’s freshman AP Biology classes ran a new genetics Gel Lab. It is an inquiry lab that looks at a food borne outbreak and how epidemiologists track down the pathogens that cause them. Students determined which food item from a BBQ was the culprit and then ran DNA samples from each ingredient to find out which had been contaminated with Shingella.
The gels were prepared with A DNA dye in the gel, so no staining step was necessary allowed the class to get results in a single double period class. We purchased individual LED lights for each lab group classes, therefore students could analyze their own results before the lab period ended. We thank the Parent’s Association for their generous support in purchasing the lamps and materials for this lab. (photos courtesy of Mr. Contreras)
