Honoring our history and traditions: Ms. Genao’s Spanish II and III students celebrated El Día de los Muertos by engaging in a 3-day collaborative lesson where they got to explore a traditional altar and learned about other key rituals and art integral to this pre-Hispanic festivity that is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd throughout Mexico, other Latin American countries, and the US.
Students helped install and decorate the altar for the occasion. They particularly enjoyed degustating (tasting) some pan de muerto from Don Paco López’ famous family-owned Mexican bakery in Brooklyn. They donated some of the tasty bread we got to enjoy on both days!
This year’s altar was dedicated to the nineteen children and two teachers who were killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas back in May of last year. We honor their memory and call for an end to gun violence and for Paz at home and abroad.
