On Monday May 16th, Mr. Robert Sandler's NYC History class toured the Lower Financial District. They studied archaeological remains from the Dutch Era, important landmarks from the Revolutionary period (they visited the graves of Alexander Hamilton and George Eacker who killed his son Philip in a duel) and the interiors of Gilded Age buildings like the Cunard luxury shipping line and the Woolworth skyscraper! They also explored the African Burial Ground, the notorious Tombs prison from the early 1800s, and the iconic Art Deco skyscrapers in the 1920s. Finally, they learned about important events like the anarchist bombing of JP Morgan’s bank (note students touching the remaining scars on the facade), the Hard Hat Pro-Vietnam Riots, 9/11 and the Occupy Movement at Zuccotti Park. The students had a blast! (photos courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
