Mr. Robert Sandler continued his tours of the Lower East Side with more classes in Jewish Experience this week and contributed the following narrative to this week’s update. They toured the Bialystok synagogue, the Eldridge street, and the Greek Kehila Kadosha Janina. Students held Torah scrolls from 18thc Greece, and learned about Jewish immigrant life and the sweat shops by studying the Levine & Rogarshevsky families at the Tenement Museum. They ate pastrami sandwiches and drank egg creams at the famed Katz’s deli, and explored the famous Lower East Side’s past through architectural landmarks. They also visited an exhibit at the Henry Street settlement where they learned about social activist and progressive leader, Lillian Wald. In one of the photos, you’ll notice a student reading about her medical bag. Wald ran a visiting nurse service in the Gilded Age, and was a pioneer in public health! Students on this trip also visited the dining room where Eleanor Roosevelt and the NAACP met and organized political action. (photos courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
