This week, Mr. Sandler and Ms. Madden and twenty three of their students attended the twenty-fifth annual Frederick Douglass Book Prize ceremony at Trinity Church. The prize was shared by two scholars: R. Isabela Morales for Happy Dreams of Liberty: An American Family in Slavery and Freedom and Simon P. Newman for Freedom Seekers: Escaping from Slavery in Restoration London. In partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University, the Institute awards an annual prize of $25,000 for an outstanding non-fiction. Students loved participating in the Q&A with scholars and schmoozing with Yale professor and Pulitzer Prize winner David Blight at the reception. They also all received copies of the award-winning books, and had the pleasure of having the professors sign them as well!

See a full size photo collage here.
