Social Studies teacher, Mr. Robert Sandler shares that he "had Ethan Brovender's (a senior in his Jewish History class) father visit during the last week of classes in January. Shahar talked about his family ‘s history in Ukraine in the 19th century; how the Holocaust impacted his family, and his life growing up in Israel. Shahar also shared stories about his experience in the Israeli Army, working on the software for F-16s, his memories of the Oslo peace process, Hamas bus bombings and his observations about Israeli politics and society. Shahar then answered student questions about the Netanyahu criminal case, the threat of a nuclear Iran, the Gaza Strip and the shared military technology between Israel & America that led to the development of the Iron Dome. Finally, he delved into the factors that contributed to Israel’s transformation from a poor country full of refugees in the post WWII era to the Startup Nation. The students found our intimate conversation enlightening!" (photo courtesy of Mr. Sandler)
