GSA Summit at Stuyvesant 2018

GSA Summit at Stuyvesant 2018

January 2018, Stuyvesant’s faculty engaged in a full day of professional development workshops both inside the building and in other parts of the city. While workshops were taught in the cafeteria and library, we also were honored to host the DOE’s first-ever Citywide Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Summit to honor diverse identities and share ideas for making schools safer and more affirming for LGBTQ+ students, staff and families. First Lady of New York, Chirlane McCray, joined more than 600 students and school staff as workshops and meetings were held throughout the building, experiences shared, and special guest, actress, Miss Peppermint spoke in the theatre. A dance followed for HS students in the cafeteria as well.  You can read media coverage of the event in the Huffington Post.

The Counseling Department was honored to be of support this week to the GSA summit reported on in the opening of this Update. Not only were our counselors on hand to lend support throughout the building, but they also engaged in professional development with our own staff as well as led sessions in the library on Welcoming Back Students after Extended Absences. It was a great team-building day!
