Eco-Fact of the Week -- Week of December 21, 2020

The Environmental Club presents the Eco-Fact of the Week for the week of December 21-25, 2020

We all know the horrors of plastic bottles: turtles choking, piling landfills, the sheer amount of energy needed to produce such a vessel. But despite all the consequences, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, and Nestlé continue to reign at the top as major plastic producers for the third year in a row. Out of 51 countries surveyed, 72% reported Coke to be the most littered bottle. Although the company has sought to get every bottle returned by 2030, sell 100% recycled plastic bottles in select stores, and partake in other initiatives, many believe that this isn’t enough. Too little, too late! When it comes to reducing our plastic waste, it’s important that we not only target the consumers, but also the companies producing the plastic waste. We must continue to pressure such corporations and demand changes. Better recycling programs and more incentives would also help, but in the meantime, help to preserve our resources and properly sort your trash!
