With COVID-19 heightening our needs for single-use, disposable plastic products, especially in the medical industry, hospitals have only been increasing their plastic consumption to minimize infection. However, out of all the waste generated by health-care activities, only 15% is classified by the World Health Organization as “hazardous” waste capable of infection and/or are toxic/radioactive. Taking this statistic into account, medical centers are urged to cut back on their plastic use in the remaining 85% of generated waste to minimize the much farther reaches of environmental degradation, which may likely lead to other diseases in the future.
