Every year, 8 million tons of plastic is washed into the ocean, where it gets broken down to microscopic pieces of plastic. The microplastics in the ocean are ingested by marine life of all sizes, interrupting their endocrine system as the plastic molecules resemble the hormones in their body. Similar microplastics can end up in your water and food. Every week, an average person ingests 5 grams of plastic, which totals to about half a pound at the end of the year!
