Dr. Nedwidek-Moore's AP Bio Year in Review

This year, Dr. Maria Nedwidek-Moore took Advanced Placement Biology on one field trip per term. She shares this year-end review: “In December 2019, we visited several special exhibits at the AMNH including one on the life of Tyrannosaurus rex, and the Live Butterfly Conservatory. Pictured here are my two class sections (except two students who were attending an out-of-state Debate Tournament), my husband Eric Moore ('88), and School Counselor, Undine Guthrie and family, on the bridge stairs, in front of the museum, in front of the Origami Tree and Northwest Coast Indian Boat, and in the Roosevelt Rotunda. In February 2020, AP Biology analyzed bacteriophage lambda DNA and transformed coliform bacteria with a specialized protein to make them glow green under UV light, and we are shown here at the DNA Lab at City Tech in Brooklyn and back at Stuyvesant analyzing our results. Chaperones for both groups included Ms. Marianna Reep (Biology and GeoScience), Eli Stahl (father of Zeke '21) and Rebecca Sausner (mother of Declan Breen '21 and Catriona Breen '17). The AP Bio labs were graciously funded by our Alumni Association.

In November 2019, Genetics Research went to City Tech College to analyze two aspects of their noncoding genome for variations. They are shown here in front of the college and inside the lab after each student finished analyzing parts of their own genomes. Chaperones for these trips included Andrea Nelson (mother of Cameron '22), Denise Bigo Early (mother of Grace '22), and Patti Kibatullin (mother of Katherine '21). In March 2020, in Medical Human Genetics, in which students present their proposals to cure incurable inherited illnesses, students had just finished the midpoint of our work toward that goal, and they are shown here admiring the results of their bulletin board index card projects. Little did we know that this was the last day of instruction within the Stuyvesant school building for the Spring Term 2020, but because of this, some students in this class are missing from this group photo. The Genetics Research Labs in November were graciously funded by our Parents' Association.

Dr. Nedwidek-Moore adds, “It has been a joy to work with all of these young adults. Warm wishes to all for a safe, calm, restful summer focused on health and family.” (photo collages courtesy of Dr. Nedwidek-Moore)

A special commendation for our amazing Environmental Club, who have shared a fact for every week of this year along with supporting photo! Bravo and heartfelt apologies for any week that your facts were missed in the Weekly Update’s inclusion.
