Dr. Lisa Greenwald shares that over the mid-winter recess AP US History students and she (together with her husband, Douglas Lavin and daughter Eleanor), went to Temple Emanu El’s Streiker Center to hear a panel on fighting white nationalist violence—attorneys, plaintiffs, and nonprofits that suing white nationalist leaders after the Charlottesville, VA incident in which one peaceful counter protester was killed and many others wounded. They are using an under-used statute called the Force Act or the KuKluxKlan Act of 1871 that students learn about in US history class to hold these people accountable and bankrupt their organizations. Their work is dangerous (they are threatened daily) and inspiring. Stop by the Social Studies 3rd floor bulletin board for more information. (photos courtesy of Dr. Greenwald).
