Congrats to Stuy Chess Team on '26 Nationals!

Adding to their 12th Grade National Co-Championship in December, the Chess team has returned from Chicago with a double triumph in the K-12 National Championships, March 26 to 29. Thursday night, our tournament started with a bang when Aditeya Das ‘29, Louis Barry ‘27, and Jed Sloan ‘26 claimed Stuyvesant's first Blitz Chess Championship since 2010. Our blitz-loving contingent of 26 took home many individual medals, led by Aditeya in 9th overall and Louis with the top score in the u2000 category. Stuyvesant swept the medals in the u1800 category with You Zhou ‘26, Arko Chakrabartiroy ‘26, and Caden Cao ‘27 finishing 1/2/3. Our team in the Under 1800 Blitz tournament took fourth, led by Michael Chen ‘29, Raymond Chen ‘27, and Junxi Lin ‘29.

All that was a warmup for the three-day, 354 player main event from Friday to Sunday. Stuyvesant started strong but after a terrible round five Saturday night left us in 5th place, and 12th Grade National Champ Jed was forced to withdraw due to illness, spirits were low. But the team rebounded brilliantly to become National Co-champions with six wins and two draws in the last two rounds.. Again the team was led by Aditeya, whose six points out of seven also earned him the 3rd place medal as an individual. Aritro Chakravarty ‘26, capped a great career with 5 points and an individual medal (tied for 25th), Rhyan Grennan ‘28 (4.5 points), Louis (4 points), and Arko (4 points) contributed to Stuyvesant's comeback championship. Arko added a medal for top score in the 1700-1799 category. Congratulations as well to Oliver Hua, whose six points out of seven earned fifth place out of 327 entrants in the Under 1600 tournament.

The Chess Team would like to thank the Alumni Association and the Parents’ Association for their generous support. Next up, our girls aim to add a fourth national championship to our 2025-26 season at the All-Girls Championship in Chicago in April.

See a full size photo collage here.
